What is Polyethylene?

Polyethylene is the most widely used plastic material in the world. Its production and consumption is more than 300 million tons per year.

Polyethylene is cheap, hygienic, easily processable, widely accessible, durable, chemical resistant, electrical insulator, and energy efficient. This is why it is replaced by classic materials such as wood, ceramic, metal, and leather in many applications.

Polyethylene is produced easily by polymerization of ethylene gas. Polymerization is a process in which monomer molecules bond to each other to form polymer. In this case monomers are ethylene gas molecules and polymer is polyethylene.

Polyethylene is produced in different grades and forms. The main forms of polyethylene is high density polyethylene (HDPE), low density polyethylene (LDPE), linear low density polyethylene (LLDPE), medium density polyethylene (MDPE), and ultra high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE).
